    Joomla is the perfect CMS.

Go to joomla.org and search for modules/components for your purpose - I'm 100% sure that you'll find what you need as the ideas seems quite common :)

Try using 4homepages photo gallery. For me, it's the best in town.

I started using Joomla about a year ago for my photography site. I installed various photo add-ons and the one i found the most effective was Exposé 4.
If you go to my page:
    http://www.rosenberg.es
you´ll find a good example of this working..
    good luck

I found a fully fetured photo competition component
    istos.ws/ english/ antici_photo_competition.html

It helped me a lot the last one year to create 7 International photo competitions
It has a great support and quick reply
They even did a lot of customizations for me at great prices
    I hope this helps
    Thanks

Joomla is really great for photo site. You can find what you on joomla.org
There are many tools to slide, view and make contents. I use phoca.
    Hope this will help.

If it's a more complex type of photo gallery you want then go for joomla if not you can always use wordpress.

What did you use for your template to work from? I really like that overall look. I am new to joomla and so I have a very limited knowledge base to draw from..

    Thanks,
    Rick
