try using filezilla with your web hosting ftp settings. download filezilla, then contact your web hosting for their ftp settings, and enter them into filezilla, connect, and upload. ;P

you can also search google for other ftp clients, like WINSCP ( which is what i use ), and read more about the FTP protocol.

In regards to your question, first make sure that your domain name's dns is changed to your hosting providers hosting namerservers.
After that a very simple way to upload your index file is ftp via Internet Explorer 8.
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Type the following ftp://yourdomain.com in the address bar and then hit enter.
    3. You will be prompted for your hosting FTP user name and password:
    4. Then click view on the Internet Explorer menu bar and select "open ftp site in internet explorer" and then you will be prompted to re enter you hosting FTP user name and password.
Now you have accessed your hosting server via ftp and all you have to do now is
Drag and drop your index file and your done.
