A friend and I were discussing a site we are trying to optimize, and we came up with an interesting question. What if we were successful in getting ranked for keywords that turned out to be less than desirable? For example a high ranking just results in lots of phone calls and emails that don't translate into sales. The question is: how would we go about getting "unranked" for those keywords? It's really just a philosophical question. I don't anticipate doing it. But it is an interesting question.
Try doing some link building for the other websites in the serps for that particular keyword and hope that they overtake you. Alternatively, use spammy techniques that will get you "unranked" for your keywords - but this probably won't be keyword selective. Even if you overload your anchor text with your undesirable keyword the search engines will probably pick up on this and just unrank you across the board.
for uncompetitive keywords ranking mainly because of on page content, remove those keywords. For keywords ranking with strong back link support - maybe request all sites to remove your link ?
lol, that's pretty creative. in this mythical scenario that would be perfect sabotage. let the competition get bogged down with needy non-buyers. heck, that's an interesting tactic in general. i wonder how effective that could be? for example, building some links to compeitors for keywords that are the opposite of the desirable keywords.
get those KEYWORDS out of your website... means they should not be present in META TAGS, Content, Anchor text to any link, anywhere in your website... but i dont find a reason where you want your site to be kicked off from the SE on keywords... (seems you are working for your competitor... lol)... all the best with UNRANKING / Degrading...
hehehehe , are you scared by lot of phones and lot of clients, and lots' of money? lol ... something like that won't happen .. hey man who don't want more clients and more money?! who...
You can check to see if any of these ideas work by using your google sitemap. Look under statistics, page analysis and examine your "In external links to your site" to check the results.
