How to transfer files to another computer

I know it's probably simple, but I would like to know the fastest, most practical way to move my files from my desktop to my laptop.

Any help is appreciated.

How many files/how big are they?

Do you have a CD burner on your PC?

 

Set up a wireless network if you want to do it regularly. If you haven't got a CD burner, get your hands on a zip drive. I just bought a cheap flash stick... bloody cool 64MB for only a few quid. Go up to half a gig!!!

 

Software exists that will transfer the entire lot of files, if you guys do not come up with a solution for her I will find the software.

If I recall it is called "ditto" or something like that.

 

If they both have network cards, you could just use a crossover cable to connect the two machines and set up a mini network...

A crossover will likely cost you less than £15 (Not sure how much that is over there)...

That could be one of the easiest ways to do it.

I think there is a cd burner on the desktop. I just put my IncrediMail files and settings onto a disc and transferred the settings over to the laptop and it worked fine.

It's only to do once, this way all my files are on one computer.

Not really big files, just my work. Some PSD's, html files, graphics. Just stuff like that.

I think it is a good idea to backup your entire box on another computer and keep it offline to protect yourself in case of a virus.

You should always have some sort of backup, also never get rid of your old computer, even if the hard drive is damaged, many of those old files can be recovered by experts even if you can not load them.

I had a box that died and the computer tech simply took the old hard drive out of the dead box with the bad motherboard and put it in the new computer.

It worked fine and I had all of the data on the new box just by transfer of the hard drive.

I just removed the old OS files off of the HD and left my files on it.

 

In my opinion, networking the two is the best solution. Otherwise, the CD is probably the next best option. I don't know what your level of computer networking experience is so that would be the determining factor.

 

My other computer is in good working condition. I am only moving files because I would prefer to work on the laptop now that I've finally got one.

transfering your files using usb flash drive is faster than burning cd. it is more convinient too.

 

I don't understand the cd burning. I thought I could right click on a folder and send it to the disc, but it's not an option.

I guess I have to do something involving cables?

 

If you put a blank disk in the drive then open a folder to it, you should just be able to drag the files to it...

I am using Windows XP on both machines. I thought this would be simple. I just want to move a few graphics over....ughhhhh

Wouldn't it be quicker to FTP the work to your web server / webspace, then download it to your laptop?

Just a thought.
