How to tell the true age of Domain (not dropped)

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by FanAddict, Jan 4, 2007.

I am looking to purchase an older domain (already have one in mind) and I want to know how to tell if the domain was dropped and picked back up...

    Example:

    Creation date: 25 Oct 1999 10:20:35
    Expiration date: 25 Oct 2007 10:20:35

Is the creation date the TRUE age? NOT DROPPED.....

    Thanks everyone!

Yes, the creation date is the date of registration. If they domain dropped in say 03 and someone registered it, the creation date would then be 2003. Just make sure to check the whois at the registrar's site for the domain for the most accurate information.

If it was dropped, the creation date starts over.

Effectively, once a domain drops, the details are all reset. Therefore by looking at the creation date you can see hom many years running the domain has been 'active'.

Looking at archive.org is a better way of determining how active the website was.

Doesn't archive.org only pick up if the domain has a site on it??

Not really. Check out whois on Auratek.com. It was dropped in October ~ November last year, but the reg date hasn't changed.

This is just one of the many examples.

Do some research before buying and make sure the domain wasnt associated with any "shady" businesses, websites, etc.

was it like a pool.com auction.....or was it like afernic.com

Cause sometimes auctions are just for names, and they don't have to be dropped to be in an auction...

I personally have never seen a reg date NOT adjust to the re-reg date, I have bought over 1000 domains in the last 5 years

It was a snapnames.com auction. Pool.com sux and catches nothing but some .ca which snapnames is not qualified to capture.
there are ALOT of dropped domains in my portfolios with original reg dates.

    FYI:

    wow: Thanx for sharing ...

This is interesting cause I have seen some many " aged " or old domains here for sale.....so then how is there a way to really tell...if the reg dates arent updated?

u'd hope that they are NOT updated. it doesn't bother you in any way. They are not considered to be "fake" as they are the true reg dates. The real reg date can be even older, because it can have changed in the previous drops (not so uncommon).

    Well here's another question...

    What does "Updated Date" mean?

    Example...

    Updated Date: 19-dec-2006
    Creation Date: 14-dec-1999
    Expiration Date: 14-dec-2007

    Maybe updated means renewed?
Or the details were updated (changed from previous owner maybe)
