I always laugh at the people who think they are being cute with Google.

Asking a question like, "are we allowed to do that as
long as we don't say something like "go here and click on the ads"(or
    something dumb like that)?"
is asking to get the answer you got. In fact, I would be surprised if your account is not on a watch list of questionable accounts.

You made it sounds like you were posting crap links and trying to be just short of asking people to click. I would have given you the same answer google did to that question.

If you ask Google is it okay to place links to sites that webmasters might like on a webmaster forum, the answer will be different. Likewise, if you ask Google can I link to a celebrity site, from a signature in a celebrity forum, that would also be allowed.

People need to use common sense. Slamming links to your sites in forums and other places where people are not interested is SPAM and it will be treated as such by Google. Is that really so hard for people to understand.

this sentence sound like you would like to encourage people to go to your site and click your ads, of course google will say no. the rest of thing just the same like what browntwn said. try to edit your question a bit and send them again and see what will they answer you this time. ^^

In response to Google's reply to the email - they pretty much HAVE to say that. However, their concern is not with individuals - I don't think they'd go after a single one of us EVER. Their main concern that they are guarding against are spambots. Google HATES spambots as the flood of links to these sites disrupts the integrity of their search results. For those who don't know, I'm referring specifically to the spam bots that will automatically (without human intervention) post links to a link to some website across THOUSANDS of forums and blogs within the space of a few hours.

They even have a part of their site dedicated to getting these sites reported http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html (we're talking about not only being removed from their index, but probably also getting their adsense account closed).

You'll also notice the wording in their TOS they use the word: UNSOLICITED - again referring to the spambots (which are about as unsolicited as it can get). When you post your site in your sig or in a post conventionally (at least on a forum), it's generally accepted as common practice if you're a regular member there, and hence is NOT unsolicited.
