Whats the best way to tell if your site has been sandboxed by google as opposed to just not showing up for a particular search term?
    Thanks

the best way to see if your site is in the google results somewhere (not for a particular keyword) is by searching with the term: site:yourdomain.com If you don't get any results it means that google hasn't found you yet (if it's a new site), or that you have been 'punished' for some reason.

There's also a good set of tools that are available from various SEO companies. I personally use SEO Moz - they have a KW rank tracker - in general, if you're in top 50 positions for certain KWds and go to zero, you've either been banned or re-sent into the sandbox.
