It seems that you just gather followers without thinking about targeting. First, you have to know if your followers are real human or bots. It is useless to talk to bots. If they were bots, you better find new followers that are interested to your website.
Socialize with your followers with the same niche you're both interested. Treat them as real people not just for business purposes.
Hey, number is not all in the game of success.. It is about the numbers having same interest. If your area of interest is different from your followers, you are not going to get a single visit to your website. So, you have to agree that less number with similar interest is much better than lots with dissimilar interest.
This is a little off the wall, but I do this from time to time. Follow mainstream stuff like news. sports, movies, etc. Retweet some of the big news of the day which almost everyone is aware of. Some may be interested and some may not, but they will see you in their timeline. Usually I can get a few clicks to my account by doing this and then some to my tweet links or website.
Just do a research that what your followers often tweet what other people do for promoting what you have done so far and how it matches with the followers attitudes.
