I think that first of all you need a lot of traffic to start. I've read that a good cpc rate for affiliate programs is 1% and from those less than 0.5% actually buys something. I prefer using CPA programs (which are very simmilar to affiliate programs) and I am more sattisfied than affiliate programs.
