    Hi,

I just launched my new website and am now thinking of the best way to start attracting links to my site. What would you recommend? What is the best first step?

You may start with submitting directories, and finish with some cool link bait.

Advertise it and do link building.
Probably you misunderstood something.directorycritic.com accepts directory only.As I see the link in his profile,I don't think his site is a directory.

Directory Critic is a site with loads of links to directories. It is really good because you can search for paid directories, free directories, deep link directories and high pagerank directories. You can also add your own directory as well.

I didn't say that you can submit your own website.

Yes directories is the place to start, also consider a press release if you have something news worthy.

You can also buy a few links on authority domains ;)

Link bait is also a cool and easy way to get some natural links as zokiii said.

You can also buy text/banners links from sites with the same niche.
Go for promoting your site by forum participation, blog posting, dir submission, and much more. :)

Thanks so far for all the useful info!

I just started with some directories (free for now) and am thinking if I should pay for listing in any directory. If yes - which one? (as budget currently limited) :)
