SEO starts as early as building your sites. You have to have your a list of keywords that you will target and optimize your articles with. These are the same keywords that you will rank for. Make sure you do your on-page SEO first and one you have a few articles up on your site, you can begin your off-page SEO. Our lessons on SEO can give you a background on how to get started. Hope that helps. Have a good day!
My personal suggestion is to learn as much as you can and go with trial and error my friend. Some keywords you are going to try to rank for will be easier than others and may need a completely different strategy when it comes to link building. You also need to figure out if you want to spend money or if you want to spend time. By spending money you are probably more likely to get better results with link building services since you are not to familiar with particular strategies. However if you are on a tight budget and want to spend your own time, I would suggest starting with article marketing because while you are creating the backlinks to your site, you will also be receiving a good little trickle of traffic that could even start producing sales.
Well I think you should start first with the on page SEO. If you have set up your website then be sure it has good and unique content, easy to use interface, Title Tags, Meta Descriptions and other factors. After that you can then proceed to off page SEO. Now this will include mostly on submissions such as directory submissions, social bookmarking, press release and social media marketing. You have to advertise first your site and gain huge amount of traffic before proceeding to build huge amount of backlinks every month to increase online presence.
SEO is not only all about link building and internet promotion, such as directory submission or social bookmarking. SEO importantly involves ensuring that your contents are of quality. So start from your contents. Make sure that what you will share in to social networks will be useful and interesting to social network users. Make sure that the site you are adding to the directories is a site that when people find out- they will visit it. Take note that even if your site ranks high in the search engines, if the searchers will find out that your site doesn't provide quality - they will just leave your site and never return again. Onsite SEO is a better way to start. Make your contents good. Make your title, headlines and description interesting and catchy.
The very first thing you should do is know the reader of your website, the keywords they searched. Then integrate the keywords. Afterwards, do your link building strategies. However, i suggest a full blown social media marketing.
I think there's a lot of free ebook here for SEO Newbies. There's a lot of tutorials on Google like seomoz.org
It seems that at early days of website there might be problem of crawling or getting indexed by Google, so you can try Social bookmarking as those sites seems to be frequently visited by Google bots, so being listed over there will invite google bot to your website and by this way you can get easily crawled. Apart from crawling and getting indexed, Social bookmarking is also one of the best way to earn some quick backlinks. If you have to do directory submission than go for high PR and niche directories so that you can get maximum possible exposure and link juice.
You can start basic SEO by ensuring that your keywords are in the title, the meta description, the meta keywords, and spread about naturally in the body

You will need articles and links to use in your SEO process. Articles that have SEO'd keywords and links that you get from commenting or submitting feeds. Learn as much as possible, it's a process.
By anyway you can start, before that learn and read the important things. It will be helpful for you.
I completely agree with the said post, First off all give more importance to On page - starting with Keyword selection, Title tags, Meta tags, Heading (H1 to H6) tag, Image tag, Content of the page, Text Ratio (should be more than 15% as it will be helpful in keyword density), sitemap xml and html, then move forward to off-page, once on-page is fine, then focus on off-page. Let me know if anyone has some more ideas. Thanks!
Start with Directory and Social Bookmarking both then go for Article and press release submission lastly do forum posting and Blog commenting
The first step to SEO, is determine the keyword you want to target. If you're really new I'll recommend to read a lot to gain some background first
