I run a phpLD directory and would not run anything else there support forum is the best and the script rocks.

My hosting is inmotion hosting there support is also great and no downtime

 

Running a web directory is very possible. You are right to operate within a niche, especialy if you have an interest in the topic.

The hardest part is getting started. I have been involved with directories since 1999 and I think it is even harder now than it was then but the principles are the same.

The first descision you need to make is what software you are going to use to manage your directory. today there is a gread deal of choice available to you. If I where you I would test drive as many as possible before actualy launching your site. I dont want to make any recomendations to you becase it is all a matter of personal choice as to what software you run with.

Once you have choosen your software or scripts and have installed them on your server you have a web directory, but... it's empty and no one knows about it. If I where you I would seed the directory with a fairly large number of sites to get it started. This makes the directory usable for anyone that finds it and also greatly speeds up the directory building process. Through time you will find a growing number of suggestions for inclusion will be received.. that is if you allow user contributions.

The biggest problem with running any form of directory is "link rot" this is a term coined to refer to dead links. It is pretty importaint that you regulary clean the directory out and remove any changed or broken links.

You earn from google adsense and/or featured links. If your really good, also with private advertisement.

phplinkdirectory is best for directory sites. its easy to use.

 

If you call filtering through a bunch of spam and bad/poorly written listings as an editor easy to use, then you would be right. Or perhaps like a lot of PHPLD users you've got an "accept all" mod *cough* linkfarm.

SBD Directory Software sorts the listings into 10 different categories based on how well or poorly written they are, and you can reject the bad ones in bulk. It saves literally hours of time

 

I suggest you to come up with some other option because already there are so many we directory sites. Try to accomplish with article directory.

Have you considered building a few subject related sites (computers/health/travel for example) and then selling links on them? It may take more work but it could be easier to compete as there are a lot of directories out there.
