Search for 'google seo starter guide pdf' and read that introductory book, then read Kristopher James (or is it Jones) book entitled 'Search Engine Optimization'. When combined both should give you a solid understanding of what seo is and how to go about doing seo for your websites.

I suggest you take a better approach and begin by staying away from forums until you have a firm grasp on the basics. Trying to learn SEO by reading forums is like trying to learn math by being showing a page from a college calculas book, a multiplication table from the 1st grade, a 5th grade geometry page, a senior college level statistics book page, a page from 9th grade algebra book, etc. You don't get things laid out in and orderly, progressive fashion where you learn the basics and build on it.

95% of the advice given out in this and other SEO forums is 1) remedial in comparison to what you'll learn from any book on SEO from the local bookstore or 2) just plain bad misinformation from people who have no clue what they are taking about. Forums are riddled with misinformation and random one liners from people who have learned a few SEO buzzwords and declared themselves SEO experts. It's the very reason SEO as a profession has such a bad name.

If you want to learn SEO, go down to your local bookstore (Borders... Barnes & Nobles... etc) and buy yourself a couple books on SEO. Even Search Engine Optimization for Dummies is fine. The goal is to learn the basic terminology and concepts.

Once you've read a couple of books, start yourself a WordPress blog about something you know or enjoy so that you can experiement with the basic concepts you've learned.

Continue learning by following REPUTABLE SEO professionals, not random SEO blogs from no named people from around the world. Read Danny Sullivan's SearchEngineLand.com, Aaron Wall's seobook.com/blog, SEOByTheSea.com, SEOmoz.org/blog, MattCutts.com/blog, and sites THOSE guys link to as notable sites. That will give you plenty of info.

The ONLY forum I would recommend trolling in the early stages of your learning process is webmasterworld.com because it is SO highly moderated and they don't allow people to drop links, so the spammers and blackhats and people who claim to be SEO experts but know very little ALL stay away from there. People who give dumb one line answers there that have nothing to do with the topic at hand (which is often the case in other forums) get politely asked to leave after a warning or two.

Once you have a firm grasp on the basics and intermediate SEO techniques THEN it's safe to start trolling forums. You should be able to tell by then who knows what they are talking about and who is blowing smoke up your butt and handing out bad information. I would estimate for every 500 posts you read ONE might give you some tidbit of useful information or new idea that you can use... Most of what goes on in forums is people rehashing the basics.

Once you've spent 6 months or a year learning about SEO day in and out, consider attending Pubcon - a yearly SEO/SEM conference in Vegas. The sessions are good but the networking is incredible. I learn more over dinner and drinks with people I meet at that conference than I learn all day in sessions or in months of learning online. I LARGE percentage of peeps attending Pubcon make their living by running affiliate sites, online stores of their own, etc. In otherwords, their livelihood depends on their knowledge of SEO/SEM so they have great experiences to share. SMX and SES are two other conferences though they are a bit more corporate.

is right, books are the best way to learn things

forums are opinionated and though some information is great others can be misleading and out of place

a book is much more straight forward

Before diving into SEO techniques it is important to know the basics of web development.. Remember, don't worry about SEO techniques at this point. Code a website that contains 3 pages total; homepage, contact and portfolio

Both On-Page SEO & Off-Page SEO make successful Search Engine result positioning.Keep on submitting your site under various SEO tasks. Off-Page SEO helps your pages to have a good position in Search Engine Results Page (SERP) from outside of your website. Along with this, have good practice in improving the structure of URL, site navigation and content
