I can't say I agree with mad4, but he is right in that there are two routes you can take; spend time on collecting tons of free links, or spend money on a few paid for links. Personally I prefer the free approach.

Its not the fact they are paid that matters, its the fact the links will be high quality and natural that counts.

Are you saying that there is no way to get free quality links? I don't agree with that...

I am saying that lots of free links from directories are going to give the site a bad link profile from the start - that can harm your site for ever.

Natural links (or paid links that look natural) are the way to go.

That's a toughie... Agree fully with the paid trusted directories, but both reviewme and payperpost are likely to be picked up as only semi-natural (bloggers have to disclose the paid nature of the post - an easy way for the SEs to pick up on this). Now if you can get decent natural looking links (i.e. embedded in on-theme text blocks from on-theme websites) you should do well.

I wonder if Google in particular is trying to discover these paid services. And I also wonder just how much trust SEs give to paid links such as these? (we all know Google really hates link selling)

The search engines have stated they are not trying to find links from paid posting services and are not worrying about them.

Yep, but are they blocking the love from these links? OT but could you build PR purely from paid posting?

I agree. A new site should not start with links from sites that also link to spam. And many of the free directories advertised here fit that profile.

    First make a great site.
Second ask sites in your niche to link to you.
    Third: Keep building the site
Fourth: to specialized, quality pages, get a wikipedia link

Lots of advise and suggestions here. Keep following facts in mind :
    - Link building should be a continuos process and with a new site, one should go steady. Start with fewer links and target not more than 300 in first 6 months ( my personal evaluation).

    - Submit to all ... Free directories, link exchanges,

    - Keep tab of latest approaches to link building like article writing and submission, signatures in forums postings and develop it as a long term startegy. After a certain period say 9 months, you can work on voluminuos link submissions. Though this is not a rule but quite handy while working with new sites

I have had the greatest sucess for new sites by taking it slow in the whole link-building process.

Get no more than 5-10 links within the first month. Do this by linking from your own relavent sites or by purchasing permanent links in quality Directories and blog posts.

Generate traffic to your site by posting your link in relavent forums that you participate in.

Only once your site is actually indexed by the big 3 S/E's it is time to do a couple of article submissions. By month 3, you should start doing directory submissions and aim for around 10-20 new links/month.

By the 6 month mark, you should have built up a couple of hundred links and a lot of natural links should also be starting to appear. Link building should be something that you spend a couple of hours per month doing for your site.

This approach has served me reasonably well and lets sites grow at a steady pace. By taking a steady approach, with a long-term plan you generally do better than submitting your site to thousands of directories in a few days.

    Correct... one more thing.

If you want link exchange then you must have a links page in your site so that you can linkback to other sites and so that you can many good quality incoming links.

    Thanks!

For the first step, put your website link on your signature. That will be the 1st link to your website. :)

While I am new here, I did manage to go from PR 0 to PR 6 in 2 months. We developed a ton of inbound links, and less than 5 of them are "planned" links, in the sense that we planted the link out there somewhere, such as a squidoo page or something.

    Key things I did (IMVHO):

Commented on blogs; it is natural for those who read the comments to click your name and go to your page. If they like the content, they may link to it.

    Have fresh, original content.

Comment on relevant forums, using your signature file

Notify your mailing list when you update the site.

If you own other urls, have them link to your target page (obvious, but many do not do this)

email bloggers you know and ask for their opinion on your site, any way you could improve it, and so on. If they like it, they will comment on it.

Bloggers love to link to things. If you have a static webpage, you may only update your links rarely. Bloggers often link to 2-3 urls in each post.
