I have a new website in the making, brand new domain, the site will launch in a month from now. I do understand the power of link building. How do you start from Zero? What the first steps? What need to be avoid? Merci!

Well once you get up some good content you can submit it to directories and social bookmarking sites.

Dont forget the "old fashioned" way of link building: Requesting links directly from other webmasters.. But dont bother until your website is "worth it". You'll have to send out a lot of requests and will probably only get 1 link for every 20 or 30 requests.. but get a few PR4 and PR5 links and it will be worth it.
This was one of the things I did when my site was brand new and I think it helped a lot.

Submit your site to free directories first. You can get some hundreds of 1-way links for free, if your site is good.

Directories are ok- but much better to have few good link trades with respected sites in your niche.

I have been working on the same issue, and have found a number of directories and backlink sites that allow link submission. It may take time, but I believe it will ultimately be worth the effort.

I'm going to start submitting 5 of our sites to 3 directories a day each and will get back with you guys on the results and if that makes a big difference. On paper, it sounds like it should, we'll see what the results are after a few months.

yep, totally agree, all emails asking for link exchange with my website has no responses ... perhaps my website still not worth the link, so all I can do to get 1 way link back is submitting to directories, social bookmarking but no one digg it :( then stuck, don't what to do for da next steps.

    - Ask a review from bloggers (with related topics).
    - Send a press release to journalists

I have no problem in getting quality links for my new websites since getting quality links from blogs with high PR (5 and above) is easy.

There are tons of tools to locate blogs with high PR.

Contrary to the rest of the advice in this thread you should NOT do the following for a new site:
    1) Submit to hundreds of free directories
    2) Submit to hundreds of article sites
    3) Add a sig link in a forum
    4) Exchange links

You should use Yahoo directory, 5 or 10 quality paid directories, link baiting, payperpost and reviewme.
