You have to be hosted on a "mail tolerant" server so you can send mail and not get shut down. You have to have a working "suppression file" and unsubscribe function at the bottom of all your emails.

unless you have a double opted email list you risk getting your hosting account and Internet access account terminated as sending emails to that list would be considered as spam.

Here's the 10 steps I take when I do a new email marketing list:

    1) Plan Your Email Marketing Strategy

    2) Start Building Your Email List

    3) Write Your First Email Newsletter

    4) Design Your Email Newsletter Template

    5) Distribute Your Email Newsletter

    6) Check Reports & Stats for Your Campaign

    7) Optimize Your Newsletter & A/B Test Continuously

    8) Monetize Your Email List

    9) Survey Your Readers

    10) Read, Learn and Appy New Email Marketing Techniques

This 10 Step Method is purely created from my own experience.

You need to be patient on creating a trust relationship with your email list. But it definitely pays off.

Here's the details of these 10 steps I've written at hubpages called "Email Marketing Guide"

I hope this helps. Good luck with email marketing.

i don't recommend email marketing (opt-in, bulk mail spam, etc.) and here's why:

    1. very few sponsors allow email traffic

    2. if you host the site yourself, your hosting account will get shut down

    3. most email lists you buy are worthless junk ..

    4. you will most likely not hit the inbox, and thus be wasting your time

    5. if you do hit the inbox in any volume, you are vulnerable to lawsuits or worse - it's illegal in the usa

there are SO MANY alternatives to email marketing, in my opinion, it's not worth the effort and stress ...

mailing to opt-in lists that you compile from your own customers is something else entirely, and highly profitable.

If you do spam and if it's not opt in then you can be charged $10,000 per email.

Aweber to me is the most professional worthwhile autoresponder site. Many of us have been using it for years.

I once worked for a company that sent around 5 million emails every month. Believe it or not, these were customer emails and clean double opt-in. Yes, I'm serious.

We were shut down by every ISP one by one. First Bellsouth, then Speakeasy, then Cogent. Then we tried these guys and were also shut down by them: americaint.com

Finally, we tried a server in China that didn't even make it into a single Inbox.

A few months later, I left. Didn't want to deal with the drama anymore.

Basically, the ISP's don't want to deal with complaints. It's much easier for them to simply cancel your account than get a bad rep with their upstream provider. You're headed towards a brick wall, dude. I recommend finding another way to promote.
