How to start building a clone like etsy

I am wondering how i should start building a clone like etsy

I have no background on php programming or anything ...

    Option 1
Engage a developer to do it for me but I am concern about bugs and maintaining it after the job is completed as I am not a developer

    Option 2
Buy a ready made software from AGRIYA - BuySell which is a ETSY Clone ?

But I am not sure how long they can support on it or is it really worth it?

Also after buying it, how difficult is it to engage a cakaphp expert/developer to modify and maintain it in the future?

    So question is whether ...
    (1) To build it or
    (2) To buy it (and hopefully engage someone outside to modify it)

Bear in mind I am no coder or expert or programmer

I notice you are part of Agriya ... since you answer the question ... can i assume ALL THE FEATURES that is etsy is available with your clone?

Including a termination of an account after X days when someone filed a complaint?

In my personal opinion you should go for CMS (Content management system) and learn some html coding, it is very easy to learn. After this you do not need any outsource.

I was testing your site and shock to learn your search function is not working correctly all the time.

I try searching field like "bed" or "shoe" and it show no result :( when clearly there are such items

Hi there, I just got in to the office and saw your posts. I will follow up with the developers for the search issue, I think the 'beds' search term didn't work because there aren't any bed products listed, just some of the products have pictures of the beds. I tried the 'shoes' search but nothing showed up even though there seems to be a product called 'shoes'. I need to check with the developers about this and will update you asap.

Also, can you let me know about the feedback? Where did you leave the feedback? I'll make sure it's followed up on properly.

    Thanks,

    Peter

Hi, there are numbers in the URL because when the developers imported the sample data they didn't want any duplicates so replaced the first letter with a number. I've asked them to fix in the demo this because it looks unprofessional and looks like a bug when it's not. The script uses nice, clean search engine friendly URL's like:

    example.com/category/sub-category/product-name

Also, I'm not sure what was done to the search but the 'beds' and 'shoes' searches are showing results now, I'm waiting to hear what they actually did to make them show up.

This customer site seems to be live http://xoole.com/

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Hi Peter
    Thanks for you reply

But have you thought if user have something more generic in mind.

I am going to use for a car shopping mart.

There is no way I can prevent the same product name is in the same category

    Category : BMW
    Product : BMW 320i

OK, that's a really clever idea, I've sent it to the developers to see if they can come up with an elegant solution that doesn't require any changes. The brand and model can be defined as categories and sub-categories, maybe you can go one step further and define the year?

    example.com/bmw/3-series/318i/{problem}
    example.com/bmw/3-series/320i/{problem}
    example.com/bmw/3-series/325d/{problem}

I think there are two approaches to this, one involves some mid-sized customization and the other involves some small customization to maybe use a timestamp for the product URL, so people can give any product (car) title they want but the URL will just be the timestamp numbers. It's guaranteed to be unique each time.

Hopefully I can get back to you tomorrow with the answer.

    Peter

Defining the year will not help as there are millions of 318i sold worldwide per year.

Following are two different cars but they share the same title

    2010 Volkswagen Passat Komfort

For over 2 months I have been looking for a "perfect" ready application for a classified. My first posting was dated back in Oct this year with the following posts at the 3 most popular technology forums ...

    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/show...site-like-etsy
    http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=242414
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2317195

All the replies given were mixed, some say to develop, some say to buy a ready script. At one point in time, I did try to find a freelancer hoping to develop a brand new one from scratch at odesk, elance, freelancer etc. however I gave up that idea as finding a reliable developer that can develop a reliable web application that is bug-free and tested is not an easy task. Support is also an issue. I heard of horrible stories where freelancer qouting a hefty amount for small customisation.

I finally decide to go back to my initial idea and that is finding a ready classified web application

    My Requirement

    • Classified with 3 types of members
    • Refine Search function for listing (Mandatory)
    • Has a good track record and history?
    • Price?
    • Constant version update?
    • Email and online support?
Following are a list of classified application that one can find online and forum. There are many 1 liner forum response that you should try this or that software. I have exhausted all the possible forums, digitalpoint, codingforum, sitepoint, V7n. unfortunately no one really give a conclusive reviews on why one product is better than the other. What other way than to test it out yourself. In the end, I decided to shortlis three more reliable and proven classified scripts out there and they are Worksforweb, Flynax, Geodesicsolutions and Esvon.

Following are some that I have checked out and did not even make it into the shortlist

    E-classifieds.net ,

    - There is little update on this and most of information is a little outdated. Looks like there is not much support or updates

    noahsclassifieds.org
    - Lack of support and update

    BuySell (Etsy clone) by Agriya
    - Very new, still rather buggy. Have posted some question but did not get any decent reply.
    - One of it is, you cannot have the same title for two postings as it conflict due to how it is displayed on the URL
    - Also I do not need shopping cart

    Following are shortlisted and tested

    geodesicsolutions.com
Track Record/ History / Constant Version update / Trial :
I did shortlist this application initially and test and play around with it. What I like about Geodesicsolution is the update comes quite often and regular. The latest version was out in 30th Nov 2011 and previous Version update 5.2.4 maintenance released in June 2011. They are also coming out with an Iphone apps soon. I believe they do have a huge install base as they have been around for quite while.

    Refine Search Features :
Not available, did not ask for customisation as well as I am not that interested

    Price :
The price tag for this software is $799, it is ok price to pay if you are NOT considering any of the add-on. Most of the add-on that you probably need, you need to pay for it. Even basic stuff like SEO add-on, you have to pay $49 for it. I guess that is their pricing strategies, frankly why would any buy any software and not have any SEO capability??

Support : I did not email them as I was not keen but there is a lack of online technical chat, tried couple of times but not much response

Conclusion: Also what I did not like is the design is rather "old school" and it also claimed that olx.com as one their customer? I prefer to find a company that is focused on one single script rather than a one stop solution.

    http://geodesicsolutions.com

    Esvon

Track Record/ History / Constant Version update / Trial :
Esvon has been around the longest time, I can even find forum posting dated back to 2003 talking about them. Their long track record is their strength. Besides that their update is regular as well with the last update with new modules dated Nov 2011. I downloaded the trial and tried the demo version , installation is fairly simple and configuring the software is pretty simple as well

    Refine Search Features :
Only application that has this feature. I have no doubt that Evson are strong developer and they know their stuff well

Price : Expensive. All modules, you have to pay. For the open source codes you have pay extra. Source code domain license is 995 USD extra to the base package cost. Easily building a complete solution is not cheap.

Support : Email support is ok. First email took over 1 days to reply, subsequent email is ok, . There is no online support or what so ever. Request for customisation but they indicate they are too busy and request me to wait till mid Jan. I have this feelings they are not as enthusatic as other developers (maybe i am wrong)

Conclusion : Even though Evson met most of the requirement and a tested product with site hosting over 100K listings. The hefty price and encrypted software for five of their files make me think otherwise. The support and lack of customisation is also a little concern for me. Overall if you dun think any customisation, I will probably recommend this product.

    Worksforweb
Track Record/ History / Constant Version update / Trial :
Also been around for a while. I was not able to install the trial, drop an email but no reply so no choice but to evaluate using the online demo version. Was quite disappointed and found one reference sites buggy and one site which is listed on the portfolio is not even using the product any longer. I tried the online trial version, configuration is easy. Documentation of the software is the best among all the rest in my opinion. Software is very well-documented. Version update is also very regular with three updates within a year. Latest update been v.5.5 Classified Scripts. Mobile version is available. Plugin are free as well

Refine Search features : Not available as well but is willing to customise but I am concern as they do not have any sites that has this features currently

    Price : Reasonable price.

Support : Email response is over 1 day. Online support is limited to certain hours.

Conclusion : I was close to deciding with worksforweb but the lack of customisation and the feature requested is a concern. The references sites that are not working is another reason.

    Flynax
Track Record/ History / Constant Version update / Trial :
Flynax is the newest player among all the above, with that being said the track record is limited. Version update is slow. Last version which is 3.2 is last year april. That is a big concern for me, lack of update. Another issue is the forum is not accessible to public... On a brighter note, I personally tried the software and I think it is very decent piece of software. It is also very feature riches with many add-on and plugins available. These guys from Kyzastan are good at what they are doing. I am glad all the reference sites are working fine with a few having the refine search feature that I am looking for. Mobile version is available like Worksforweb. Plugin are free as well. Website claimed they can develop an apps which I personally did not test so I cannot say much

Refine Search Function : Not available but it shall be made available soon in version 4. they are also willing to customise it. There are some sites that are already using it. Looks pretty decent

    Price : Reasonable price

Support : Email is fast, reply within a day and I must say they are rather patience. Online chat support is good as well. They are online 80-90% of time, I chat with them and they can give me good answer. I really must give it to them when it comes to both email and online chat support.

Conclusion: Everything about flynax works for me except my only concern is the lack of new version update which is not regular as the rest.

    My Conclusion

Finally my decision is inclining towards Flynax, that is mainly due to their promise of version 4 which is coming soon and their immediate support which is essential for a guy like me. This is my opinion stem from my personal experience. However I believe all the above 4 scripts are all decent products and I am in no way related to any vendors. I just thought of sharing my experience that I gathered after 2 months of research with the rest who is considering looking for a classified application and scripts.

    Good luck in your search!
