    Hello,

In order to build a mail platform similar to that Yahoo or Google has, you will need ~ $250000.

some free email script will do but the time and the tweaking required is so much....try the combination of:
    Linux/apache/mysql/php/imail/postfix and that will do,

    But

those are just the backend free application and must be customized for security and all else problems a mail server will go through such as:

    Ddos
    spamming

    and all else.

    Hope it helps

Have fun with all the spam! I have been running mail for years and it is such not the business you want to get in. I mean it is alright if you have to, but for what purpose - FREE???

There are other things that can be used for a sticky site...I am a full ISP and when the net is down no big deal, when email doesnt work - people find you!

Alright let me actually contribute..get a beefy box with high ram, use Linux or BSD, dont even bother with Windows. Postifx then becomes a good option (as a matter of fact there are tons of postfix/linux/spamassasin/amavis tutorials out there that give you step by step - that is email/os/spam/antivirus)

Then you will want to have a webmail client. Horde, RoundCube are ok, but Squirrelmail has the best tweaking capability because the code is fairly basic to understand and has tons of add-ons oh and is free as are some of these others. Squirrelmail just seems to be the easiest to get to look like yahoo/gmail than the others.

It would cost alot to make a site like this. You would have to buy and maintain servers and it would take you ages to make that money back. Also people tend to stick to what they know. Even if you offer a better service than Gmail or Hotmail.

Jilmail is HORRIBLE. The script is written in CGI and does not install easily. Their website has been down for months, there is not such thing as customer support. Stay clear or you will be losing money. Your choice. On top of that you ask for a refund and they are rude.
