how to split big files on vps?

    hello i want to know how to split big files like 5gb files in 500 mb parts?

    if you know please provide me details. i have vps from santrex.
    please give me each step what i have to do ?

    this is not working with big files like 3 to 5 gb files
    its just creating 14 files(100mb) for 3 gb file . so its not wrking :(
