How to sleep all night without working in your brain???

Hello to any and all who might have this problem. I'm usually able to get to sleep easily but "if" I wake up needing to visit the bathroom OR just awake too early - like 2AM, my mind clicks on and goes to work. I try so many different things like deep breathing, doing the ear zones, saying a mantra, etc BUT I'm still working on things that need to be done (or not)!! I am sort of a work-a-holic & do have a harder time relaxing so would appreciate any and all thoughts to help.

Keep your mind relaxed and try to avoid concentrating too much on work, especially when you go to sleep. I too suffered from such situations in the past. Try to follow mind relaxation techniques. Adequate mental rest is essential to keep you refreshed for the next working day. Best of luck.

Just work hard for the entire day and give some physical work outs.... exercises or something else;) drains out your body lot of calories and thus your body likes to fall asleep in bed till the sunrises up and wake yourself.....

Just turn off all electrical items in your house and lay down, you'll fall asleep quickly.

Find out a hobby which can keep you occupied when you are at home and not think too much about work.

You don't need sleep to rest. Often, I think we place so much emphasis on falling asleep, we forget how to just rest. I've trained my mind not to require I fall asleep to get rest. Once your mind is off falling asleep you will fall asleep naturally. The point is not to try to force it because you can't. Just practice closing your eyes while awake and laying there. Observe dogs. They are very good at being "awake" but sleeping. They are our best teachers when it come to how to sleep. :)

This is a HUGE problem for me. I was told I "don't sit well". And I don't. 2:00am seems like the magical hour for me. I just wake up and my brain starts running.

In case of an emergency, like I went to sleep at 11:00pm, I wake up ate 2:00am, I can't get back to sleep and I have a very important meeting at 10:30am that I have to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for... I keep a small MP3 player in my headboard with something called Speed Sleep. It's like a self meditation thing that puts me right out.

But using it too much lowered it's effectiveness for me, so now it's just for emergencies. Good Luck!

I'm like that. I seem to think better and enjoy the night better than the day. I think it's 'cause I'm online a lot, and night is more active on the internet for me as that's when the Americans get on. :p

That doesn't work for me at all! I require some form of noise, like a fan, etc. If it's too quiet, I stare at the ceiling until dawn.

Altough I can just rest without falling asleep, I sometimes need to hear a fan to relax. It's amazing how many people rely on fans for sleeping purposes. It's become this whole other use for fans.

yes working even harder beyond your body's threshold limit will put your brain in ideal state automatically while you are sleeping ,
even you will not aware if any bomb blast happens near you

You are very right on this. Alot of insomnia is mental. Trouble sleeping can become something to dwell on and worry about. Doubts trick your mind into becoming its own worst enemy. The key is to stop striving for sleep and straining against it at the same time.
Insomnia can act like quicksand, the more you try to get out of it, the more it sucks you in.
If you just lay in bed and rest. Focus on just keeping your eyes closed and body still.

Actually, something else just occurred to me. If I have an actual concern; "Complete the proposal by noon", "Come up with the money for that new project", "Pay the mortgage", etc

Often it helps to get out of bed and put a note in my planner for the next day about it.

That way I'll know I need to address it, I can get it out of my head and get some sleep. Otherwise it creates this loop in my head that demands my attention.

That's a really good technique, I use it too. Get it out of your head, tell yourself you need the rest more than the worrying and usually it will help you sleep.

Another thing I do is, try to read something. Don't go for exciting or scary books please... try reading some technical books.

Of another way to bore myself to sleep is to play a really slow Tower Defense game or something that's not too exciting like Bejeweled...
