I have an entry level server at home and I want my domain to point on this server. What should i do? I already tried the following but no success.

I configure my domain DNS like this

    primary dns: 192.168.0.1 (sample only)
    secondary dns: blank or same?

am i doing the right thing or do i have to signup for dns server?

You have to have a dns server on the internet that will communicate with the primary dns servers on the net. Try www.dnsmadeeasy.com.

No. I don't know of any free dns services (doesn't mean there aren't any out there). You can buy a dns listing from your registrar as well. It may be the easiest way to go. Or do a search for 'free dns service" and see what comes up.

    Wait a moment...

    1. Did you update the NS records at the domain registrar which you utilized to register the domain?

    2. Are you running a DNS server at home?

Many (most?) registrars will allow you to change your DNS servers, but what you really need to do would be modify the records so that you keep using your registrar's DNS and the DNS record points to your IP. I think the DNS record is called CNAME.

DNS Made Easy is quite cheap and multi-homed. It costs less than a $0.50 a month. Just go there and it will explain everything you need to get it to work. Their support staff is really helpful, so just drop them an email if you run into snags.

You need to change the A zone record to point to your IP address.

The IP address needs to be static, most registrars offer a control panel or will make the change if you e-mail them
