How to set up a server ??

At my home i have a Inter Core 2 Duo Processor , 256 MB ATI Graphics Card , 4 GB DDR2 RAM, 500 GB SATA HDD, Network Cards, etc etc running both Windows XP Pro SP2 and Ubuntu 7.10 , APC UPS with 1 hr nonstop backup

How the question is how can i use my pc to set up a web server so that i can host site in it .

What do i need to buy and what are the free stuffs available in the net.
Hope Cpanel 11 will be good but its too much costly ...

Can anyone please tell me the full details of setting up server . Everything from scratch u can understand that i mean all i have the pc above and then what to do how to connect what to install what OS to use ... Names of apps ( if possible download links ) will be great.

What are the free apps available and what are the paid apps available for setting up a great server that can resist all website loads.

The first thing you need is to ask your ISP for a static IP, as setting it up with dynamic IPs is not simple for a newbie.

Forget Cpanel on your local server, just try setting up the OS first and if you can SSH into it from the outside world, then use something like Webmin to manage your services on the server.

Your ISP will more than likely charge you an additional monthly fee for a static IP. Your bandwidth will more than likely be bottle necked running from a home network unless you have the proper industrial equipment and proper line carriers.
