set up a good directory? what do you define "good"? by the way, i'm using phpld and quite happy with it. If you define that as good.
Make it stand out from the crowd. Offer something other directories don't (or very few do) that people are interested in. Make sure it's on a topic you're actually interested in (unless you're making a general directory). You could even try doing some market research to find out what is lacking and what people would be interested in. Don't think of a directory just as a list of sites; make it purposeful and informative. And also keep it up to date (e.g. remove dead links regularly). Perhaps take a look at Yahoo's directory (which is incredibly successful). You can find some other tips in an article I wrote (even if you don't go the PHPLD route some of the tips are general). Finally - good luck!
First make sure why you want to run a directory. Then find a good link script with a nice design. And then promote your directory, post in DP or other webmaster forum, let all know your directory. Try to get high quality back links and you would get more submission. Last forget you have a directory.
First you need to have a good domain for directory(e.g. alivedirectory or avivadirectory) Then buy a good script(e.g. PHPLD 3.1)
Don't put partners in your directory such as this one http://www. a1directory. be/ Look at the bottom of directory PARTNERS. Family Friendly Site
1. Create the category structure of your directory, do not copy other directories T_T, this includes Yahoo and DMOZ, well.. try to be creative 2. Design is important, it will be the key of your success at the very beginning! Be creative too. 3. Build backlinks, find a way to build links, use google and type ' link building tutorial ', be creative as well. 4. Get good SERP, to have good SERP with your directory you will have to add sites manually to category that will never receive many submissions, this is harrassing and VERY very very.. long In the end you gotta be creative
