I have just started using adwords after reading several guides but my first campaign is failing miserabily I have a good quality score but not much traffic and sales.. My first issue is I have selected very targeted keywords but the problem is they don't bring me much traffic What do you guys suggest? build a long list of keywords?? What procedure you follow when selecting keywords for your campaigns?? Thanks!
you have the right idea. Very targeted keywords is the way to go, and not bringing in much traffic is probably because the market is small. If you have a limited budget, resist the temptation to go broader untill you are seeing positive ROI from your current advertising. Then test a broader keyword and see how it performs. As far as choosing keywords, the Google Keyword Tool is a perfect tool.
So long list of of very targeted keywords is the way to go I guess? Means only add those keywords in which you are absolutely sure people searching for this keyword are willing to buy your product? Am I right?
One way to break out keywords into targeted ad groups is to use the keyword tool to build a long list of keywords. Download them into Excel and start moving them into different columns that are designated for separate ad groups or you create an ad group when needed. After a while you'll see a pattern and it will be easy and quick to do. After you set up each ad group, go back into the keyword tool and see if you can find more keywords - ad group specific. Excel is also a great tool for building long tail keywords and geographic specific keywords like - overalls portland, overalls portland or, overalls portland oregon, etc.
As Dootch says resist the temptation to go too broad just for the extra traffic. As it stands you get little traffic, but the keywords are probably so targeted that when you eventually do make a sale at least you'll be in profit. You can try a little broader if you like, but if it doesn't work, go back to how it is now and setup new campaigns for other products.
