How to see if a PR is fake

    Hi,

im looking at buying a 4 year old domain, PR3 for a new project however i need to be sure that the page rank on the site isn't fake before i buy it. Ive checked Google and it doesnt seem to have many pages indexed but that doesnt always mean its faked.

Are there any tools people use to see if a pr is true. The domain is currently parked with godaddy so would that stop it being faked?

    thanks
    carl

the problem is that two times i bought domains that before i buy the pr was verified as valid in more than 20 pr checkers..and after i bough the domain, all sites verified the pr as fake..so,i guess that the only way to see if is fake is manually seeing backlinks and indexed pages

Check google backlinks and yahoo. If site does not have alot of links something is wrong.

Look in the internet archive and see if any content was ever on the site..

Quickest way is to type "info:domain_name" on Google. If it lists another site then PR is fake (redirected). Good luck.

the indexed pages is not one of the criteria to say if a pr is valid or not!

    1) Check google cache to see if different domain is cached (PR could be redirected)
    2) Check backlinks using Yahoo Site Explorer. If there is no backlinks there is a good chance it's fake.

I would not use PR as an incentive to buy a domain, if a domain is profitable/brandable for what you need it for - then buy it. A domain should not be bought for PR3 it is too low, no offence but a PR1-5 is more than easy to get without spending any money.

Unless the PR is higher than 5, don't let this bother you, you could achieve a PR3 easily by the next update (if there is ever going to be one) with a few simple steps.

However there are plenty of tools which can determine whether a PR is fake or not. I would post the links however I am a newbie. The advice I will give is to check with more than one source before you make any sudden purchases, PR can also be easily faked with 301 redirects etc.

Good luck with your finding, and I hope it works out good for you.
