How to secure a domain that is being deleted

I know someone who is going to delete their domain, I want to know what do I need to do to secure this domain so that it will land in my hands instead of other people.

Contacting the person to change the registry to my account is not possible.

Also another simple question, are deleted domains similar to expired domains in terms of SEO? like do they still remain on their spots on google after it's deleted and reinstalled?

thank you for your time, all help of any form is appreciated.

Regarding your second question, a dropped name will only retain its Google, Alexa etc. rank for a limited time. One of the biggest failures I see among domainers and marketers is that many pick up quality drops then let them sit. If the domain is parked or 404 the next time it gets spidered then it's going to lose its PR and other values. So if you get it, don't just sit on it.

Google does look at WHOIS info, and a domain will lose its PR when it drops. What it won't lose, however, are it's backlinks, which are more important than PR if you ask me.

You should backorder the domain at SnapNames, Pool.com, and NameJet. You only pay when you successfully get the domain. If more than one person backorders the domain, it goes to auction among those that backordered.

Even then, you may not get it. The competition is fierce for good names.

    Good luck.

does Godaddy stand a chance with backordering? $60-$70 at other 3 is kinda steep.

I had a domain backordered with godaddy, and it took 4 hours after it had dropped for them to grab it. IMO, you're better off registering by hand.
