What options are the best for saving headers/buttons in photoshop. Which filetype? Dithered? Non dithered? Interlaced? Theres so many options. What is best? Thanks.
What is best? It totally depends on the image - that's why there are so many options Big colourful images (like headers) are generally best saved as JPGs. Images with less colours, big blocks of solid colour, or transparencies are usually better as GIFs or PNGs. If you don't know what you're doing, then leave GIFs/PNGs alone. CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+S JPG at around 75%.
it really depends what your image is and the compression rate. Jpegs can kill gradients and don't support transparency. I'm looking forward to the day when there is complete cross browser suppport for pngs
Just pass your PNG files through a PNG optimizer, it removes the gamma channel from the file, then your pngs look the same in all browser
I strongly agree with that.. If all browsers support png images probably maybe gif will no longer be use on the web.
I agree. I personally don't like to use PNG as much because of the browser issues. I have not tried a PNG optimizer, but if you could try it... It sounds like a very good idea! For me personally, I use JPG a lot. If I need transparency... even though that is very very rare for me I just go to GIF. I do avoid GIF since I'm not a fan of the quality.
Not this one, im using PNGoutWin: http://www.ardfry.com/pngoutwin/ but you can look for a PNG optimizer that removes the Gamma channel
