I think you should use a good text/html editor, sometimes notepad saves file in word wrap and it will be difficult to edit the file. I recommend you to use Notepad++, you can download it here http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/ .

    ;)

Notepad is ok for editing basic html but if it's loosing the formatting and squishing the text the I personally would look towards Notepad++ as mentioned above - if you want something a bit more powerfull (but still free) you could look at NetBeans - http://www.netbeans.org/ - it runs well on my Linux box and have been told it's pretty good under windows too.

instead of using notepad use wordpad. cos sometime notepad cant render line chars i.e \n and makes entire code look like in one liner.

The reason it would all be squished together is because the original or your copy was not written in a PLAIN TEXT editor. It was probably written in something like Wordpad. Just use a plain text editor. I personally like Notepad2, which is practically the same as Notepad++ that everyone likes.

Get Notepad++, its a must for writing neat html and clear css. Its autocomplete really speeds up the work. Try installing some color schemes like monokai etc, to make html look more organized... the tabbing system is amazing!
Try this font called "envy code r", its an appeal for eyes :)

Dreamweaver is overkill if all you want to do is edit the html.

Notepad is the opposite, it's just too basic.

Notepad++, sits perfectly between the two.

There's a text editor called 'e' which is pretty good (but not free) - worth downloading the trial and giving it a go though - I find it really good for Ruby on Rails development due to the directory tree and format highlighting - http://www.e-texteditor.com/
