You can do that, there's nothing wrong with it. I would suggest just simply putting the donate button somewhere that it'll be highly visible to all your users, like the sidebar of the page or something. If you are going to use some words, just put something like "Help support this site".
There's nothing wrong with placing a 'Buy Me A Beer' plugin. It's not like we force them to buy one, they could ignore it if they didn't want to buy you one. You could change it for other beverage if you're not into beer. I use coffee on my blog.
A Paypal donate button would do just fine. Like Gatorade said, put it in a place where it can be seen by others, but not too conspiciously either. The button won't make sense if your blog is extremely new and not too well recognised though....
I think you need to clarify your purpose for seeking donation and try to give some useful information to your readers which will initiate them to make donation.

Or you could ask them to "help me buy a ticket to Event XYZ" (for example, if your site is about music, you could say "Help me buy a ticket to the next Opera Show").
