Well first of all the domain you have bought should have been pushed to you (yahoo, godaddy, blah blah, what ever you use) in the first place. Once that is done there is no need to worry, it will renew itself unless you cancel it.

Who owns the domain now? Did you do a whois lookup? Or did that person simply do a masked point to your server? Give more details please.

If you registered it through 1and1 then just transfer it out to Godaddy or somewhere else. You will then get an email which you need to click on to authorise the transfer. Nothing to worry about here!

I thought you meant at first you were buying through a friend and he was the contact on the domain.

First do a whois lookup on your site, and make sure email of administrative contact is right, and you have access to it.

Then you can go to the new domain registrar (whoever you like, e.g. godaddy) and apply for a transfer. This will lead to an email to the administrative contact of the domain for approval.. do that, and you should be done.

It typically takes 7-8 days.. so it's advisable to start the transfer atleast 15 days before expiring (earlier the better)..
