There are several things you can do to prevent Google indexing. Disallowing your tag pages in Robots.txt does not guarantee that they won't be showed in their SERPs. If other sites were to link to your disallowed pages, Google can still decide to show them if they think they are relevant even without crawling them. They will simply use the link text to construct a <title> to display in the SERPs, show the URL, and not include a snippet.

The best way to prevent them from being indexed AND prevent them from being shown in the SERPs is to use a <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> element on the pages. This will also cause them to remove the pages from their index and prevent them from being shown in the SERPs if they are already indexed.

If you can't do that then the robots.txt is your 2nd best option. Once the disallows are in place, log into Google's webmaster tools and request a URL removal on the the Remove URL tab of the Site Configuration -> Crawler Access page.

Use All In One SEO plugin for Wordpress.
In the settings page of it, you can choose to add noindex metatag for Tag archive. That'll fix your problem.

You have to give it some time to get de-indexed.
Alternatively, go to your Google Webmaster Tools and manually remove all the tag pages.

I know 3 ways of non indexing any inner pages:

    1. use meta tags <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> on those inner pages which you donot like to be indexed.
    2. make use of ROBOT.txt and use the nofolow instruction to show which page you donot like getting indexed.
    3. Update your sitemap.xml by deleting those links and update it on webmaster tools.

    1200 tags or 1200 pages ?

In webmaster you will see :

A directory and all subdirectories on your site
Remove all files and subdirectories in a specific directory on your site from appearing in Google search results.

use this or wait Google re-index.

You can go to Google Webmaster account and submit your url for removal. It will surely get removed from Google listings.

This was bound to happen since you removed a bunch of pages at once.
Just give it some time and keep building links. The ranks will be back.
