Isn't that a rather generic question? Each site has a different set of issues. Some most common ones are following:

    1. Missing caches - If something can be cached, cache it :d
    2. Bad coding - if your pages are bloated because of unnecessary code the site will slow down.
    3. Indexes - Sometimes a simple database index can solve big issues.
    4. Inline javascript / css - Highly avoidable in most circumstances
    5. Too many images / objects - Use css sprites or a separate domain for assets.
    6. Bad host :D

If your website has heavy flash animation, replace it. It kills much time of users

Reducing the web site load time is one of the basic solutions if you want visitor retention on your web pages. Most of the visitors lack patience and they will switch to a different site if your site takes too long to load.

    Hi,

Personally, I would suggest below channels:
    1. Hosting your sites on a faster server.
    2. Don't use too much images and flashes on sites.
    3. Trying to optimize your database and SQL queries.

    all the best,

Keep the heavy images & "extras" (flash, javascript) to a minimum. Also, your host plays a big part in loading time too.

#2 on jitendraag's comment is what I would look into, bad programming is usually the problem when other things work fine.

That usually is not required for average sites though, and can get more expensive than it need to be.

Remove all heavy content from you page like havy images ,videos.

Heavy picture and heavy animation take more loading time. Reduce ineffective picture and animation and reduce unnecessary code then I hope it will be fast load.

Consider below things to reduce website load time:

    1. Remove any unneccessary code. Move inline coding to an external file when possible. Compress HTML pages to reduce their size.
    2. Use smaller images or compress the images.
    3. Remove any unneccessary JavaScript.
    4. Increase the server’s internet connection bandwidth.
    5. Host as much content as possible on as few domains as possible. The fewer domains that have to be connected to, the faster the page will load.
    6. Combine external files to reduce the total number of external files to be included.
