It's good to get visitors to your website without placing any order or making any purchase? The rate, at which users switch from your website to other site which is called "bounce rate". In internet marketing terms, reducing bounce rate is one of the main objectives of any web marketing firm.

You can only reduce the bounce rate if you do have great content at your website..low bounce rate helps you to gain ranking as well.. if you do have great content that attract users than users will definitely remain on your site for long time..

According to wikipedia the bounce rate (not to be confused with exit rate) represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who "bounce" away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site.

You need to interlink your content, and give your visitors quality posts to read so they will spend more time browsing the site rather than exit or click back button because they don't find anything useful on your site.

Good content, clean navigation and profesional look all adds upto a low bounce rate. Clear call to action always helps and offering as much info as possiable with pages such as FAQs and about us pages ect

Also making sure your targeting relevat search terms and the landing pages are the most relevant for the search term they entered your site on, also making sure any advertising links on other websites are clear exactly what the site is. Try to avoid attracting traffic thats not going to want what your site offers.

Its depends mainly on how you are getting traffic? I observe that traffic from PPC and Social Bookmarking sites have high bounce rate, as compare to traffic from search engines.

there is lots of way to reduce bounce rate, if your calculating bounce rate by the google analytics than please check how many page it is tracking code available, if google analytics code available only one page than put it on every page. either put it on every page or put it should footer of the page and footer should be common for all pages.

to reduce the bounce put the landing page what every your goal.

An Images and slide-show also helps to reduce bounce rate. Insert link in content like if you have any kind of form in your web site than insert hyperlink in "form" word (other than navigation) or you can also do like put your content incomplete in home page and add "read more" word with hyperlink in another internal page.

Agreed that bounce rate is affected by the content and its quality/value for the visitors. I have seen it change with the quality of content being improved and more call for action types of planning being done.
But one doubt comes to mind often ... some portion of the traffic seems to be automated tools scouting for emails based on keywords ... would these figure in a bounce rate as well? Or would they obviously access other pages too in order to grab email addresses and hence would not figure in the bounce rate?

Website design is a main factor that determines the bounce rate. A good and charming design would sooth the visitors in finding what they are searching for, a design that is suitable to the niche. A man visiting a party website would not have the same mental state as of one who is looking for troubleshooting.

If the design part is clear the next part is content, include quality content which is simple and describes everything deeply. The content could be easily accessible with images that supports the statement, so that visitors find it intersting.

Include a easy user interface, people do not like searching throughout the page for a particular button or portion, include an user friendly navigation.
