How to recover Word Doc from 3 years ago?

I know it's a tall order but would love to hear advice from people in the know. I recycled an apparently meaningless .doc file back in 2006. Now, it's come back to haunt me and I need to get ahold of it. Any chance? I have reformatted my HD several times since then but there has been no re-install of original XP OS. Unfortunately most 'recovery' programs are useless.
What do you think, friends? Suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Frame :)

After reformating a few times and using it for years, it is high chance that the original word document had been overwritten. I think it is near impossible. The only technology that is capable of maybe retrieving that lies with the FBI and the high tech labs but these will cost more than an arm and a leg combined.

Eek. Well, there are recovery tools that can do that.
You can search for the recovery software via the search engines.
It will probably fetch a lot of your files, hence taking a long time.
