Try To Improve On Page Optimization of Your Site as well, Though Google Penguin Deals with Web Spam but main objective of Google is to improve their search accuracy & display most accurate search queries!

Be Smart, Optimize Your Site Wise According To Webmaster Guidelines, Do not get any spammy links through link exchange or any blog network, Try To Build Theme Based links relevant to your Niche!

    Change your link structure.

Don't use the same type of link every time.

    SultanofSEO,

You said lot of sites got hot by penguin but sites that were engaged in legitimate link building practice didn't get hit. another name for penguin update is web spam update meaning google went after sites that were practicing shady link building using spam or methods that are not approved by google webmaster guideline. methods such as automated blog commenting, mass article submission to private blog networks, buying links on link farms, paid links, etc got all the sites penalized.

I have never any of those shady link building practices you mentioned, and I got hit BAD (May 16 we lost 90% of our daily traffic, and its been that bad or worse since). I went from getting between 4 and 5,000 impressions a day in Google organic search results to getting less than 400 a day. My site has tons of great content that has taken us a very long time to write, but it doesn't seem to matter. I'm so confused.

Can you explain? How many types of links are there? Did you mean don't use the same text every time?

    Panda was about Content Spamming.
Penguin is mostly about Onpage and Over Optimization.

    To recover:

Dont over do On page Optimization.
Build Social Media presence. Get some +1s,likes,tweets,retweets etc. Make it consistent.

Write unique content with minimal keywords so Penguin won't penalize your site for keyword stuffing and duplicate content.

We certainly understand. You work so hard to get a good page going, then do the best you can with SEO on page and behind the scenes, then bam...they change things. Here is what I don't understand though. When these changes happen, the sites that are always on the first couple of pages still remain. In our business, which is website hosting, Google seems to allow those that are just affiliates to stay at the top. Mainly because they have thousands of links coming in. That is very difficult to do to say the least. If you go to Google and type in Website Hosting, you will see what we mean. We just don't get it. But, in the meantime, we will try to create more inbound links to our site and see if it helps.Another thing you can try is to go to alexa, and type in your competitions website. See who is linking to them, and then see if you can get your link there as well.Well, that's about it for now. I hope this helps somewhat.

I think it's about the content's quality and you will need to get rid of bad links.

I heard similar from somebody else, but they had not explained it.

One thing that comes to mind in light of that, is if a website's content is good and relevant, it should be up to Google to find and present that web page, without off-site stuff.

In other words, if I search "Portland Oregon plumber" and I'm not on Facebook, it should be irrelevant whether the plumber has an accound on FB at all. The important part if my pipe is leaking, is does their website show or mention my city, is there a license number and phone. And does their page have "plumber" or "plumbing repairs" on it, the words I'm searching for.

So if what you shared is correct, Google would no longer be engaged is promoting web page optimization, but trying to promote or force promotion of other extensively large websites.

I know your feeling as i had the same problem, now i am trying to get traffic from realy people who needed help, you should stop buying text links, it's not a good way for link building as which way will get your site google penguin. You should try to drive from realy user and reader, now i am love to build link from forum post and blog comment, asker.com yahoo answer, find people who's question, and give them a realy userful answer to get traffic from them. This is the best way to get your site better serp.

You should probably place a bit more emphasis on social media - Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook. Don’t forget youtube - it’s much easier and quicker to rank for a YT video on both YT and google. Much harder and longer for a regular site. But you should still be able to amass a lot of traffic to your site if you use social media and build your list.

If a site has been hit, might as well close it down and make a new one. If anything buy another domain and redirect it to that one

there are some signs. also depends on what you did in the past from which you can get an idea as to whether that deserves a penalty. with automated penalty, your ranking will be all over. some keyword may rank on second page where other keyword may rank on 100th page. with manual penalty, google either don't show your site on SERP results at all or applies specific minus (-) penalty where your site ranks below that. for example, if a -350 penalty is applied, none of your keyword will rank above 350 position. this information alone is not sure way of knowing, need to do a lot of research to come to a conclusion.
