I am lost in the game of SEO. One or two of my site rank for keywords which i dont want to. I have searched forums and do research but could not found any authentic answer. I need some expert's advice, How do i Rank for specific keyword and what factor is more important in ranking ( On page Or Off page ). For E.g: I want to rank for a phrase "My favorite Hobby" which competitor( rank 1 of google search ) has keywords title,meta tags ( meta description and meta keywords), keywords in headings ( h1 tags ) and 22 index backlink on lower PR website( 1 or less than 1 ), 10 anchor text link for exact phrase. What should i do to out rank this website for same keyword " My favorite Hobby". If i build 20 anchor text link only, do i out rank it. or what do i do?? I will be very thankful to you guys if you solve my problem. Regards
Seo is a game that takes time to learn. You're on the correct path with all the one page seo. Link amount all depends on the competition levels. Post Panda and Penguin brute force link building does not work, well it will initially, but all that work will be lost. Concentrate on getting niche related high quality links. Link and anchor text diversity is a MUST, make sure you are getting links from multiple platform types and also make sure you are varying your anchor text. Social signals are also a great way to give a site authority and increase ranking with a good link portfolio. Hope that helps.

Hope just now you have started SEO. If you want to rank your website for the targeted keywords, you should follow the below steps : On- Page optimization: Having your targeted keyword in title, meta desc, meta keywords, h1 tags, content (But don't stuff your keywords) Internal linking (From one page to another within the website, use the targeted keywords in the hyperlink) Off-Page optimization: Promote that page in all social bookmarking sites, social networking. Place social media icons in that page. Get quality backlinks with your keyword in the anchor text.
@ alfie Thanks for your advice. I am learning about SEO since 2010, but din't implement it. I did not find any straight forward method that is focused on ranking specific keyword and how much effort should get me rank at 1st position for specific keyword. Do you know any free source where i can see live optimization and see increasing rank on google, i have searched on youtube but didn't find. OR a simulation game could help... Thanks
Hi Just wanted to pass by an offer my experience: - in my experience with my sites after the Penguin Update Google hates over-optimized sites so be careful and just put ur keyword where is natural to be. Dont invent phrases just so you can put your keyword, do not use to mane Headings ( one is just ok ) and like I said, put you keyword rarely into text. There are to many sites on the net focusing on on-page over-optimization. Do NOT do that. Let it be natural. Google will award you for that. - Small is Better - in this care with a links, just get small amount of links, from a very large pool of sources. Jut get links from as many sources as u can. Any type of the link you can think of. And as I said, SMALL. just a few links. And do this over a few weeks. This WILL work. @ andres solutions Thanks for replying. How can we target keywords if we do not do proper on-page optimization, it seems like google will award any keyword they like. I did not understand it... Do these technique applies to high competitive keywords? Thanks
Hi ill try to explain a little better: I do not say not to do page optimization. Do it, just to it better and more natural. Take a good look at you content, and read it, where you keywords appear unnatural, take it down. Its better this way. Google will find your desired keyword because it will be the keyword still more often used. But do not over-optimize. Let large phrases between keywords, do not put 2 keywords in the same phrase ( only if with good reason ), etc. And titles are very important, its better to have ONE heading ( h1 for example ) with you keyword. And thats it. No more. Don't worry for Google not finding your keyword, they will, and award you. Only don't over do it. An always try to ad something to your site, maybe some interesting news regarding your area, maybe some cool video from youtobe, anything that can make your visitors stay a little longer on your site. That is because no, with the update, Google takes very much into consideration, Bounce Rate and Time On Site of your visitors when they decide your rank. So put something on your site, for visitors only, do not make it for ranking, do not optimise it. Just do it for the visitors. I like to add some news like: " Did you know this?!" or "This is what is new in ...." so visitors take a look ans stay a little longer on my site. Regarding link, people used to get like 1000+links from one type of source ( like forum posting links or edu links ) Now....with the update is better to get even 100 instead of 1000+ from that source and spend rest of the money getting links from another 10 sources and types of links. Most importantly have strong quality links with that text you want to rank for in the anchor text in a natural way. This will always work. What else could work in fact?! Key word stuffing? That ended in the 90s!

I will suggest you to do SEO in a proper way to promote "My favorite Hobby" keyword. I want first do onpage for that keyword or with some other Niche keywords, then go for meta tags creation and content optimization for the website. You can take help of some professionals for the same. After all you can go for offpage activities like Social bookmarking, Article submission, directory submission or forum posting etc. SEO is very broad and every professional adopts their own tactics. But the main thing is that, result should come in a specified duration.
Practice makes a man perfect, until unless you'll not implement it yourself, you'll learn nothing....
It has about 3 steps you should follow: First, check the keyword and type it in google to understand the competiton. Second, investigate top 10 (of top 20 if you have enough time!) websites for this keyword and see where they best backlinks come from. Third and the most hardest, try to get the same backlinks (if you can!) and AT least one more backlink. Then ping all those backlinks and wait for google to index them. Then, just wait for google to help you rank higher your website for this keyword. Then... continue with the next keyword and often pay attention to the previous one
