changing a page for google bot is not allowed on google.

Every so often GoogleBot will change the referrer and IP and check if there is a difference.

if it notices a big difference the site is flagged and is manually checked.

If it is found that the site is cahnging the site for GoogleBot then itll be banned from google.

here is a link with more info

I looked at their robots.txt and these pages were still allowed as far as I understand. but by looking at the source of the link pages they assigned a class="linkgray" to the links that you can see in mozilla.

from here it is beyond me as i be no programmer, but this is most likely how they do it.
another way that would not risk a ban would be to use dissallow for the link directories in the robots.txt and that would go unnoticed by 99% of the people linking to them

Wow, thanks for this thread. Anyway, I see that Google nowadays doesn't count link in resource web page too much so this method won't last long enough.

This website hides all outgoing link from Google bot. But displays 'em for visitors. That all you need to know.

the trick is to find recips that don't understand PR and just give their links the no follow tag, whilst you get their link juice, unethical but they just want clickthroughs.

It depends on the quality of the resource page. I wouldn't say that it doesn't help.

    Great find.

I came across something similar last week. A website was hiding its nofollow meta tags from the visitors but showing it to google. So when the links on that particular page was not passing any PR to oblivious webmasters. That's why now i've created a program which would present itself as GoogleBot and detect any variations on pages where my links are displayed. Believe me a lot of clever and unethical webmasters use cloaking to trick people.

This is called cloaking. It's been around a long time as one of the first blackhat methods. It's especially egregious buck not only are you trying to fool Google, you're lying to the people you did link exchanges with.

What I don't understand is why Google doesn't have a quality check on their googlebot that randomly checks pages to see if they give the same response for a different browser.
