I had same question and I was advised to make PDF, that protecting e-book is very hard and usually not worth money.

You can disable the right click of the mouse with javascript but.. people can work around this. I agree w/ sandrodz, PDF is hard to copy! They'd have to type everything out manually.

A PDF isn't that hard to copy. They could just use a program like 'pdfedit' to modify the content they need to.

There's really no way of 'stopping people from copying'. The only thing you can do is put it out there and pray someone doesn't. Watermarks always help!

yup, I was going to suggest this, too. Save each page as a JPG and PDF the JPG's.

However, someone could just print it out, use an OCR scanner and generate a Word document. Just like everything, it's able to be copied one way or another.

javascript is not a solution for this. In Firefox with the web developer toolbaar you can simply disable > disable javascript

There is no foolproof way ( "I have tested on actual fools" ) to keep everyone from copying your content. If determined enough just about anyone can, and most likely it will be copied by someone. You can make it more difficult though.

Well, you could convert your content in another format, similar to a PDF format. Then also try to use a password protection right which will make the user difficult in accessing the content directly.

That actually is as good a suggestion as any of the others. If you publish to the web, it can be copied.

I think you'd be amazed at how few people care enough about your content to bother copying, and at how little, if any, negative impact those that do will have.

The content producers, artists, musicians, writers and even their publishers have found making stuff free on the web increases sales for them across the board, and even for the material that's free on the web. I can attest to having bought dead tree editions of at least three books (in the US$50–80 range) that I already possessed for free on my HDD. I likely would not have known about them nor have bought them were they not freely available for the downloading.

    cheers,

    gary

If people want something they will take it, trying to protect it is just alot of work.

The best ways to stop the copy/paste theives is also an SEO killer so I don't know if that is important for you atall.

I know this, and everyone else does... we are in internet business for a long time already, but I hate hearing all the same "wisdom" all over again. Its not about ability to copy, if you don't use any protection anyone will copy but if you use protection that will decrease scope of people who will - and some will be lazy to undergo tiring procedures to crack pdf, or try to scan paper. So protecting makes sense as it will decrease the risk of theft.
