How To Promote My Web Design Directory?

    I have made a new web design directory site for UK Web designers i am looking for idea's on how to go about promoting it? I understand search engine optimization i am looking for new ways such as facebook,twitter etc. Has anyone had any experience using these sites to promote websites?

    twitter is very useful providing you are mixing in the right circles and putting the effort in - not just spamming self promotion links on a continual basis.

    Start following some web designers - engage in conversations with them, keep things natural and only tweet out your link from time to time and you get a lot more traffic than simply spamming it out (a mistake many people make). There are a lot of web designers on there so finding suitable shouldnt be hard

    Other than that forums (such as this) might be useful, as would finding uk web design sites directly and trying to network with the people behind them

    You can start by joining webmaster communites such as this one and actively joining in with the discussions.

    Facebook and Twitter can work well if done correctly

    Small business forums. Presumably to be attractive to web designers signing up you need traffic that will actually buy from them - look to small businesses (and consider offline promotion like flyers, cold calling etc) who will need such services and won't have a designer in house

    Traffic is all about humans.

    Get started interacting with your
    target market and they will eventually come.

    Don't get too hung up on what sort of
    tools to use or what sort of medium.

    It's best to just focus on one and start
    interacting with people.

    Recruitment Nick i think the flyers would work out quite expensive my site is a free directory with just 1 adsense link unit and 1 adsense text only leader board so the profit is low and due to my sites audience (mainly we designers) these are less likely to click on the ads the ctr is poor, The telesales is a good idea as i have quite a lot of experience in this field and skype has some pretty good rates it might be worth doing as everybody who adds to the directory must link back so it would be worth it for the backlinks in that sense.

    Social networks and design communities are the best points to start. Try to attract the attention of people to your website there.
