First thing you should start is to write some good posts or articles in your blog, before start to promote. There are many ways which costs your time, not money. But it will be a waste of time, to do it on this stage of blog building.

There's only a limit you can do with free methods. The best things you can probably include submitting to free directories, and creating link bait which is especially useful for intertesing blogs.

Exchange links with other webmasters of relevant sites, and most important of all, regularly write unique, quality content.

One way to get traffic is to maintain a feed. You can get a free feed at Feedburner.com. I also link my blog to my EBay profile which any Ebay customer has access to. Just started doing that. I also started posting on forums as well. One really good source is craigslist but they won't let you spam them so you have to figure out a strategy to post on their site.

I would suggest writing articles to submit to article directories, create a squidoo lens to link back to your site, start using social bookmarking sites to tag your pages, stumbleupon.com, make more forum postings with your site in your signature and submiting a decent press release couldn't hurt.

    All strategies - FREE!

Try making contact with other bloggers who have similar content to yours. You may find that they will come visit your site and write about it, thus increasing the exposure to your blog.

Lots of article writing; you can always use some of the article content for your blog.

Create squidoo lenses and join groups; feed your blog or articles to your lenses.

    Forum posting...

Download Yaro Starak's FREE ebook here http://www.blogmastermind.com/blueprint/

It contains a lot of methods/techniques/processes on how to create a blog and make it successful. Read his blog as well http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/

    Another couple of great resources:
    problogger.net
    copyblogger.com

I am trying the techniques myself (even joined his paying program) and I am hoping to put his techniques in action

    Hi,

Aggregate your blogs into Money Blogs and Traffic support sites, and link the traffic support sites into a mini net and then point all traffic to the Money Blog.
Traffic support blogs can be auto generated, of lower quality and from reprint rights articles...they grab traffic and you channel them to your main Money blog with adsense.

Send your main money blog to Digg and also bookmark with Stumbleupon.

Structuring the traffic from traffic support sites to your money sites is often neglected by a lot of adsense publishers in promoting the websites. Hope this brief explanation is helpful to you.

    1. Write up around 20 - 30 good contents first
    2. Sign up at Mybloglog.com
    3. Start saying Hi to other active bloggers in MBL and visit each other
    4. Sign up with Blog Catalog
    5. Do the same
    6. Sign up at BlogCarnival.com
    7. Set up your own carnival and submit your contents to dozens of other related carnivals
    8. Use stumbleupon and start building a good fans base and good stumbling record.

That's what I did in addition to Yahoo! Answer. But Yahoo! is not a good solution for your joke website I think.

Write lots and lots and lots of unique content. In the end, a blog with good content will do well. If you need a boost in traffic, use social networking sites (especially digg).

As everyone else said in here; write good stuff! Another thing I did when I first started out, was adding my url everywhere possible (directories, forums I was a member of etc.)
Also if you find your writing really valuable and informative to others, you could join Digg, Reddit, Del.icio.us etc. This brings quite a bit of traffic to your page:)
    Good luck!
    /Mia
