Hey i was wondering if there was anyone who could shed some life on how to promote a yahoo group, to entice more people to join the group. I have a couple of groups now, but most are rather quite, i was wondering what strategies people have put in place before, or what you think i could do to get more members. Thanks in advance, Will.
Promoting a Yahoo group is sort of like promoting a message board and blog. Is what you talk about in your groups even interesting? No offense. Like a reporter, go out and find some really cool stuff out there you can post in your groups. There is a lot of good shit out there on message boards, content sites, your local newspaper, your monthly magazine, TV.... It could be on such stuff like... http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=614566. http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=518730. Look for such items to talk about. Collect them, and store them somewhere to use for future use. It doesn’t have to be anything long. Just talk about it a little bit. Contact others via other groups, message boards, and whatnot to get their viewpoint on it. Tell them that you have followed their past posts, and you "value" their opinion. Butter them up to get them to make a comment in your group. Take one hour each day to do just this, and you just may have quite a list of active readers. Also, if you can get your hands on a really popular "news" item, advertise it, and have the ad go to your group. AD: "Local girl quits high school to do her Internet full time. Was she stupid to do this?" Also, spread such news items to all the networking sites out there. If you can afford it, in addition to advertising online, also advertise them in newspapers, and, other sources outside the Net. Advertise what you are talking about, not JUST the group itself. Think outside the box!
