Post comments in guestbooks of lenses with a similar topic as your own, and add your link (the better and more valuable your comment, the higher the probability someone might click on your link). You can also join Squidu, the Squidoo forum (http://www.squidu.com/forum). Participate in discussions like on any other forum, ask for feedback, give advise, and you'll get some attention. You can also increase the SEO quality of your lens by adding relevant tags. Try creating two or three lenses on the same topic - this will increase the number of tags you can use, and will also increase your overall visitor stats.
Isn't everyone forgetting building backlinks through the internal structure of Squidoo? The site itself is very Google friendly and adding your lens to groups and adding the link to the Plexo voting tool are both very useful. The Plexo tool even allows creating keyword links. Build a group yourself just to hold are your own lenses and if others join its just gravy. Groups receive decent PR with very little effort. It seems that the higher your lens ranks, the more likely it will receive good PR so there is an incentive to work on your rank. Part of your rank is traffic so join the forum and get a few people to click on your lenses. People will also generally click on your lens when you join a group. I'm no master and have only been doing this a few months but you can do well with no outside backlinks.
Link-spam the heck out of it. There is software out there that can get you hundreds of backlinks within 24-hours from Pligg sites and remotely-hosted wordpress blogging platforms. Oh yeah - that is black hat stuff. But it's only a squidoo lens so you are not risking getting a website banned or slapped. Google doesn't slap squidoo lenses much.

I would guess one would promote a squidoo lens the same as any other site or page. Backlinks and any other form you can think of. I wouldn't think it would be any more difficult than any other page promotion when it comes down to it.

blast out a HUGE amount of backlinks to your lenses... websites on such web 2.0 properties, you will never get sandboxed for any lense... there are countless links pointing to squidoo.. so no worries... build as many backlinks and as quick as you want to your site and it will rise
