Upload game trailers, clips movies etc to your own youtube channel. have your website watermarked on them.
be active in gaming forums and have your site in sig.

it really depends on your budget, what is it?

I agree. You should use YouTube, and be active on games related sites/blogs/forums.

Twitter and Facebook works great for me.

First rule of traffic is awesome, clean, updated content that a user would like to bookmark or come back to.

Second, learn some whitehat SEO to get better traffic from google and other search engines. Don't blackhat (cheat) it though as you can get sandboxed for year(s). Half of my traffic comes from google.

Do link exchanges with other related sites, but be careful about which you link to. Recommend hardcoded links, good pagerank, not too many other links on the same page, and somewhere it would be clicked and used.

If it's an arcade game site (like mine), you could join banner exchanges like funklicks, gamecetera, gamesbannernet and/or arcadebanners. They tend to get some continuous traffic rolling around. You have to have some traffic to exchange back though.

If you have awesome content, use stumbleupon and digg, etc (social sites). These need lots of thumbs up to survive, but can bring in loads of traffic surges for quality webpages. It's more likely to work with a page that is funny or very helpful. 1000+ hits a day on some super unique quality pages. Don't spam links to these sites all the time though as they will start to bury your site if it's not good or spammy. You can also join sites like facebook to attract some members, depending on the site.

    Good luck!

Games are great in graphics. I think you should start with a facebook page. Facebook offers the huge amount of space to your sites your images. Graphics are like 1000 words multiply by a billion! You should strive towards publishing any game images and link the page back to your site or add some trademarks on them that says for more come to my site.com! You can add even the trailers on facebook page and etc. If you are publishing a game site or any site for that matter , the best way to get traffic to your site is through article marketing, facebook, twitter and of course online forums. These are places on the internet where alot of people got to learn and go something. You should leverage on these things like publishing articles on ezine.com about a game and guides, or create facebook page that promotes your site or even games that your site is promoting and twittering live gaming feeds like who's winning in WCG or KOF and etc. And Of course you could get tons of traffic via online forums that are align to your game site or even game titles.

Just work hard in the earlier stage and sooner or later you need not market anymore as everyone will remember your site's niche url and hit your sites everyday.

You can buy my book for the best techniques or just strive on building backlinks to your game site.

Is submitting to stumble upon still a viable technique?

Im relaunching www.gamerstyle.com soon and i plan on promoting it via Articles, Squidoo Lenses and a few Link Exchanges. We will also be hosting quite a few gameservers for clans etc so this is another way of direct promotion.

Any of these methods will work fine for your gaming web site.

If you have some spare time or have some money to spare get posting on gaming forums. That will really drive a quite a bit of traffic to your website. Also, just as ppcIcon mentioned, make sure you upload a whole bunch of videos on youtube and other video sharing websites and watermark it with your website domain. Try writing articles related to new games as well. They should rank well since they wouldn't have too much of competition early on and that (article) could rank well in google and give your website a valuable backlink. Do a bit of keyword reseach using the Google keyword tool. That would really help a lot in judging your competition with respect to the keyword you're targetting. The best part is that article marketing gets you completely organic traffic and for a long time to come.
