How to promote a dating site...

How would you go in promoting a free general dating site. As you may know natural search engine traffic may be too little for the site to survive.
I'm looking forward for your views...

yeah i have dating site too , maybe good promoting is Articles Directory and dir submit

 

I think the best most effective technique is Forum participating. we have been working on many dating site form last some time we have successfully build traffic on it.

 

Try posting on classifieds like Craigslt, GumTree and Kijiji.

I forgot to mention, don't try spamming too much as it'll cause your ads to get flagged a lot.

 

well, one - first thing is to go from a general dating site to picking a niche

ethnicities
handicaps
elderly
college
specific city
vegetarians

whatever, just pick a niche...a lot easier to push than just generic dating...your just another "me too" at that point, and its doubtful you have anything so unique that people will want yours over the next (bigger) guy.


Once you have targeted a specific market, go direct to forums for that market. Also craigslist, myspace, yahoo etc find groups of people with that interest and get involved with their convos.

Press releases are great, but also GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND GET IN THE REAL WORLD....you would be surprised at how much local traffic you can generate by getting out and about.

business cards placed everywhere are great.

 

You should place an interesting animation/picture which apparently relates to love. Make the animation linked to your webpage. Also, you should write a big-sized message in your webpage saying "Tell a friend about the webpage".

I know there are some free press release sites, but for an effective campaign do you need to pay for submission?

 

the best press release distribution is paid for....and it automatically gets into the "free" ones who syndicate from the paid guys

 

yeah as the other people have said, you seriously need a niche. There is no reason on earth for people to join your basic free dating site when there are 30000 other sites just like it. Specialize cause there is no way for you to compete with eharmony and plenty of fish

If you use Craigslist, create different accounts

 

buying banners from niche sites may help you.Then u can also target traffic from search engines too.

 

Craigslist Personals section all day... its free and you can get 200 Ads a day out there if you wanted to.

 

Here is a quick list from the top of my head:

Ezinearticles (write SEOd articles)
Craigslist (place ads)
Blogs related to your niche (comment on them)
Forums related on your niche (only post on those who allow you to link in your sig)
Yahoo answers (answer dating related questions and point them to ur free report or whatever)
Youtube (create vids on how to seduce women and link back to your site)
Digg/propeller (put good articles on your website and link to them)
Joint Ventures (connect with people who are already established in your niche and leverage their assets)

As we all know Dating site only need traffic and the competition in keyword will be very high so at that time it will very long time to promote this kind of site by link back perspective.
