How to prioritise and plan content?

    Hi all.

I've been tasked with preparing a six-month rolling content plan for our website, but I'm stuck on how to decide on production order.

The whole team have submitted ideas for content so we have a long list. Some is brand new content which we've never covered, others are existing pages which people feel should be rewritten or redesigned.

How would you prioritise your content? I am essentially being asked to set out a publishing schedule but nobody can agree the order in which we're aiming to publish the content!

Any advice on how to break this impasse?

    Thanks all!

Can you give us some more info? How many current pieces of content are on the site? What is the focus of the content around? ex. in tight silos/categories, clustered topics or all over the place? How old are the articles they want to be rewritten? How's the traffic split across the current articles? ex. pretty spreadout or only a few getting the majority of traffic? Is the content informational or transactional? Need a lot more info

Updating old content can be quick wins. Old content may also be better off being merged with another article or removed compeletly, depending on it's past performance.

There is not enough raw data to make a content plan for six months. What is your site about? For example, it's quite easy to fill a site about accounting. Because you can adjust for accounting activities, such as quarterly, annual reporting. During vacation seasons, you can make content about how to count vacation pay. And you also need to leave room for situational content, when some laws about taxes change, for example. If there are no such situations, then the content of some tips, top resources for accounting, top programs that will make work easier, and so on, will be great. This way it is possible to pick up content for any niche.

even though we do not know your site details, you ask yourself what the purpose of these articles is. Are these for sales, customer orientation, SEO, general information, or guides?
After selecting your objective, create a project layout. for example, if you are writing for SEO, you will need a site-wide SEO map that will allow you to integrate articles in a timely fashion easily. Contact me for a free SEO map.

if you are creating documents for customer orientation, then the recommendation would be to follow the established sequence of each product/service and arrange them in an orderly list, etc.

To prioritize and plan content, you can follow these steps:

    1. Determine your goals: What do you want to achieve with your content? Your goals will help you determine what kind of content to create and how to prioritize it.

    2. Identify your audience: Who are you trying to reach with your content? Understanding your target audience will help you create content that resonates with them and meets their needs.

    3. Analyze your current content: Look at the content you have already created and see what has performed well and what hasn't. This will help you understand what types of content are most effective for your audience and what topics to prioritize.

    4. Conduct keyword research: Use tools like Google's Keyword Planner to find out what keywords and phrases your target audience is searching for. This will help you create content that is more likely to be found by your target audience.

    5. Create a content calendar: Use a content calendar to plan out the types of content you will create and when you will publish it. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you are consistently creating and sharing new content.

    6. Use analytics to track your progress: Use tools like Google Analytics to track how your content is performing. This will help you see what is working and what isn't, and allow you to adjust your content strategy as needed.
