How to prevent family members from clicking on my ads

Discussion in 'Guidelines / Compliance' started by uca, Dec 30, 2005.

I tried a search but with no results, still, I think someone said about a way or two of avoiding people at my pc from clicking on Google Adsense while viewing my websites.

I am worried when I am not around that others forget my clear instructions or make a mistake, which I too am scared of making.

I know that it's prob no big deal clicking once in a while or so, but when I don't have control it could be dangerous.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Thanks very much!

    :)

Install firefox extension to block ads
install a firewall that will limit ads
change your computer's host file to not allow ads to show

    Good luck.

If you have a static IP don't show ads to that address

ServerUnion and dct are both correct. I personally dct's suggestion for my own sites - it just makes sense. One thing to point out about ServerUnion's suggestion - make sure you turn those off when you're at the computer.

After all, if nobody viewed ads ...

Right, so here are a few more details:

my GF uses AOL and IE to surf the web, so I can't go for the FF solution
I have my windows account but how can that help? The IP would be the same
I don't think that the IP is static
I have to mention some of the sites

    any more help appreciated!

    :)

Are you in control of the computer your 'family' uses?

You're right, setting up a different (Windows) account wouldn't work. If you don't have a static IP, that's another problem.

What kind of site is this? Is it something that they would go to, or something that they would happend upon? If it's the latter, I'm sure someone with more knowledge, could help you setup your hots file to block views to the site. You'd have to remove/rename it to see your own site, but ...

Really, though, we're getting into some horrid work-arounds.

The simplest way is to keep all the family members imformed of the situation and advice them not to click on your ads. I think it is just a matter of understanding between you and your family members.

    Thank you people!

I'll check the above link, while I'll add that it's not just one pc, it's a few scattered between work and my home and my gf's and my brothers', etc, so I am starting to think that it's not very easy!

maldives, thanks but as I said, they are not immune from the chance of...forgetting! They don't know how Google could track the Ip down and so on, they just use the web in a very simple way. So even if they know, unless I want to brainwash them and threaten them with some very nasty punishments, and it's not the case, I can't ignore the chance of them clicking on the ads.

I wrote a little php code to solve the problem for myself. Others in that thread (as well as this one) have mentioned other possibilties.

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=32144

The reason I like my solution is that is adds a table of the same dimensions of the adsense ad, so it maintains the correct layout of the page when I am viewing it.

    Sounds good!:)

I'll prob have to check all IPs, (hopefully not too many), but it should work nicely from what it looks like!

    Thank you!

I would think that Google would not want anybody to know exactly how many clicks. most likely it's a behaviour pattern anyway, so it's even more complicated to answer your question precisely.

Otherwise we would all click our way to the limit and get a few bucks of extra cash with no worries...;)
