http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http://www.site.com/sitemap.xml

Code (markup):
Change the section in bold to the full URL of your XML sitemap, also make sure to include the sitemap auto-discovery directive in your robots.txt file; and submit a updated XML sitemap in Google Webmasters Central.

No, the XML sitemap is nothing but a map of your site (hence site-map) that search engine crawlers can use to find more web pages or new web pages without having to manual crawl the website or following inbound links. Remember, XML sitemap doesn't mean you'll get indexed faster or get you higher search results; it allows the crawlers to find all your web pages.
