Steady Income or Trends... Lead to Less Checking. If, over the last month you are making about the same daily, I tend to check less (three times per day, vs every hour or something like that). If it appears through my usual checking times that things are haywire (a lot less or a lot more than normal for that time period) I tend to resort to my hourly checks until things correct themselves (assuming they do).

Today was my biggest day yet, so I started checking it more... although I went the entire day w/o checking until evening and then realized... something is different, my numbers are bigger so I started checking more. I am debating on saying up another hour to see how the "day" ends.

I have too much going on to check it every 5 or 10 minutes like some mention. That is really insane. I think Google only updates every 20-30 minutes (from what I can tell) so checking more than that seems a little crazy. Plus... I find it more rewarding to log in and see, WOW, it jumped $xx from the last time I checked, vs... it only went up $x.

I will never understand this need to constantly check up on ADsense and other affiliate stats on a daily basis. Once or twice or even three times a day is more than enough. Anymore and you have a problem. Maybe obsessive compulsive disorder? Seriously, get it looked into.

I always think, the longer I wait between stat checks, the bigger the amount will be when I do check (which is about 1-2 hours during waking hours) :)

I get a lot of good advice here on Digital Point, and there is advice that doesn't work at all for me.

This is one of those situations where the advice is terrible. The one time I neglect checking my stats, I have my second worst day of the month.

Google updates its stats for a reason. Check them!

Now, I am not saying check every 10 minutes. But, it IS insight into your business. Use it!

Of course... the overall answer of it..... DISCIPLINE.... everything that has been adviced will fall into DISCIPLINE...... There's no other thing.... that is.

It's funny how you put the notion forward that checking your stats is a bad thing and go about discussing how to deal with it. I would not necessarily submit to that point of view right away. I think that knowing your stats is a good thing, and it can actually be used to check on general "health" of your sites, SEO efforts results and bunch of other stuff that's other than just how much cash you can expect at the end of the next month. AdSense uses very robust algorithms to filter off invalid and auto-generated clicks (discussed in this forum in great details), and that particular feature makes it a very nice and reliable counter. Combined with URL channels (or custom if you want to get real creative) it can provide useful info that will help you keep track of your sites.
A task like that just begs to be automated though, so my 2c go to AdSenseLog 2.6.2 by MetalGrass software: http://www.metalgrass.com/. With this little software all you need to do is to move your mouse over the icon on your taskbar and you'll have an overview of what's going on.

So, before you label checking your stats a bad habit, see if you can get some benefits from it first :)
    Cheers everyone.

A steady downward trend leads to less checking. :(

you'll earn what is destined to you. I may sound spiritual, but it's true. No-one, not even Google, forget God, can snatch that. So, check once, or zillions of times, it's going to be same.

Give it a couple of years and you'll notice it drops down to only 4 or 5 times a day :)

There is no way that by checking your stats more often throughout the day you can do something to actually increase your earnings that quickly. It's simply counter productive. That was his point.

Your situation was purely coincidental. No need to blame him for YOUR stats.

Personally, I think you should check as often as you want.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that you should use a
    more robust solution. Something like:
    http://www.revenuecheckerforadsense.com/

Checking your stats in full glorious color with pretty graphs
is great, and it has led to a reduction in the amount of time
I need to "understand" what the hell is going on ...

Basically, if your trend is up - try to relax. Don't check so
often, and then you will get a nice surprise next time. If you
experience a negative trend, keep on checking. At least the
    graphs are pretty.

My advice. Send your stats to your mobile phone.

Actually it is a good feeling to know that you are earning money, that’s why I check my account from 20 - 30 times a day to just feel good :)

I used to check every hour back when I started but soon became more apathetic towards the dollar signs and started caring more about my websites =)
