How to optimize my blog

I own a blog on blogger with a very poor traffic, I want to optimize my blog as it would get more and more traffic so that I can monetize it in the end. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I am completely new to the SEO field and do not know how to execute the huge list of DO's. Please guide me a little more so that I can start the process. One thing more, I have to do all the thing by myself as I'm not in a position (financially) to hire an SEO firm right now.

Thanks friends for the help. One thing I want to know about my Blog....It is "Think about every thing" type blog which covers world politics, Terrorism, social issues, IT trend, Latest technologies etc.
What should I do to manage all these in a single blog while optimizing it.....or what particular keyword should I use to promote it? I am pretty confused due to this situation...
I would appreciate your further guidance.
