There are a number of tools to use for dynamic forum such as that used right here on DP! The best results I've had with dynamic content sites involved coding for "plain urls" as mentioned in the article from the IcePoster post. Also, coding for category and subcat names within the on page links can be very beneficial (most have this built in I understand). Additionally, coding where the META tags (and title tags) are filled in dynamically can be a nice boost.

Look at the literature review of the article.

I think you need no more info than is given there.

I've had some clients in the past that have approached me with similar problems of getting their forums indexed, and I've referenced them to www.staticshell.com which basically creates a static version of their website/forum.

It has the added benefit of optionally re-writing title tags and filenames to the top keywords appearing on each page.

I basically recommend using StaticShell to my clients who are interested in taking a static 'snap-shot' of their forum and dont want to hassle with the more technical aspect of url rewriting.

Fora are hard to SEO in terms of onpage factors.

One good thing on fora is that people starting the threads usually use a HOW TO-like question as a thread name and you can use it as a title of the page and use the first or whichever post as the description, eventually keywords.
These two (three with the whole thread´s content) will match for SE good enough to rank for the variations of the search phrase in the title that are searched everyday.

After BigDaddy update of Google, lots of forum threads went to supplemental index, at this moment you´re probably unable to do anything to help it, this happened even to very well optimized and unique sites.

Thing I like on Fora the most is, that they build communities, it´s pretty easy to get links from members of your community, if you know how.
